Cursive

I am teaching cursive completely different this year. Instead of using workbooks, the sutdents are using Composition Notebooks. Most of the students have had cursive instruction in the 3rd grade. Due to budget constraints, I purchased a used D'Nelian Teacher's book to see how they grouped the letters. I teach 3 letters at a time.

I start by writing them on the board twice, instucting on the strokes as I write. Then, as a class, we use our arms to make the letters in the air twice. Finally, the students write 2 rows in their notebooks, skipping lines as they go.

Here is one student's notebook.

On this page, he wrote 2 lines each of e, j, and p. Then started 4 lines of the words like and jeep.
Here, he finished his 4 lines of jeep and wrote his 4 lines of the words hut and pull.
